For people forced to flee, football can be a first step towards recovery and a fresh start. It offers newcomers a glimpse into the culture of their new country. In the Netherlands, that means cycling to the club, being coached by a volunteer or singing along to Dutch songs after the match.
For all players, it is an opportunity to better understand one another, share stories and build new friendships.
The tournament shows that often, all it takes is a ball to bring people together on the pitch. That is how refugees and host communities meet and connect.
