The final junior Netherlands squad has been named for the final stage of the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Hungary and Slovenia. Ajax Amsterdam defender Devyne Rensch is the only debutant in Erwin van de Looi’s side. Calvin Stengs (AZ Alkmaar) and Azor Matusiwa (FC Groningen) were not part of the junior squad during the qualifying group stage in March.
On Monday, 31 May, the Netherlands will face France in the European Championship quarter-finals. The match will be played at the Bozsik Aréna in Budapest and starts at 18.00 hours.
I still think that our squad is strong enough to continue competing for prizes
Head coach Erwin van de Looi comments on his final squad and its chances at the European Championship: "A real challenge awaits us this coming Monday. France is an absolute power in European football and we’ll be facing them in the quarter-finals. Despite the fact that some of our key players are now part of the senior side, I still think that our squad is strong enough to continue competing for prizes. We'll have to get past France first, though, and that's where our focus lies for now."
The Netherlands U21 ended top of their qualifying group, ahead of Romania, Germany and Hungary. If they manage to beat France, Erwin van de Looi's men will play the winner of the other quarter-final between Denmark and Germany. That match will be played at Aréna Sóstó in Székesfehérvár on Wednesday, 3 June. Kick-off at 21.00.
If the Netherlands succeed in reaching the European Under-21 Championship final, their opponents will be Spain, Croatia, Portugal or Italy. The final is scheduled for 6 June at 21.00. The venue: Stadion Stožice in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
